Greetings fellow dancespotters.

This weeks Top  Spot News Story:  Californinia Dreaming Same-sex Ballroom Dance Contest a Success. See below.

Upcoming News: Halloween Homodanceshow, Saturday Evening, Oct 20, 2007.

With barely 24 hours since the stiff competition of the California Dreaming Competition, the Sacramento contingent begins to prepare for the local Event of the season (and likely our only Event).  This costumed party promises nothing more than a fun filled evening of social dance miscues and harried performances.  Wear your dance shoes- we might need you.  Advanced tickets available on homodancespot.com as well as from a small number of homodancespotters(us) if you can find us.

The Top Spot News Story: California Dreaming Same-sex Ballroom Dance Contest a Success.

Yes the California Dreaming  organizers (I’ll refer to them as the  DreamTeam) pulled off their first competition and it was a smashing success- with a darn good chance for more of the same next year.   I am not sure exactly who all was in on organizing it, but dang it was a job well done.  So if the shoe fits wear it folks- heels will not be over 3”.  Thank you all for making it happen.

California Dreaming Dance Competition Stats and the day in brief for us local “hometown” girls.  Sue, Cindy, Marie, Cindy (not a typo- we really do have 2 Cindy’s), Alana, Sunny, Denae and Kate made up our very own Team Sacramento.  It was an early rise for most of the team- hair, makeup, eyelashes, outfits…all needed to be done before the start of competition- at noon, and I kid you not there were some concerned faces working on eyelashes at 11:45am……

The day was a thriller and the competition steep.  Starting us off in Open Salsa: Scipolla and Mills amazed others and  themselves by pulling off a solid salsa routine.  They continued to improve throughout the day dancing at every salsa opportunity –in the end, nearly mastering their routine- even though really only the first time counted.   Burson and Mills put on the moves in the Open Bronze Standard Single dances and eliminated any chances for winning for the rest of us - we were left to acknowledge their superiority with slumped shoulders and knowing head nods- we’ll be back though.   Open Cha Cha:  the dance team of Scipolla and Hurley challenged the best the other couples could muster-  only to be….honestly I was competing too so I have no idea what fanciful moves these two put on out there- all I know is…. I heard you were fabulous- keep up the good work.  Bronze Graded Standard: Hurley and Wagner dazzled the group with some festive tie-dye outfits while still managing to pull off last place-  a definite consistent couple- and certainly a pair to watch – if only for their outfits.  Bronze Graded Latin:  Wagner and Mills surprised mostly Miss Mills with consistent performances and only a few major screw-ups- obviously the judges weren’t watching or the other couple were experiencing a worse fate…. we won’t go there.  (Know that Wagner has earned reprieve from any severe criticism for at least a week due to her weekend performance and pulling this one….off.)  The day continued on with some of the more experienced dancers.  At the Silver Level there was fierce competition between the current United States Champions and our very own Cindy and Alana.    Back and forth, back and forth, first, second, first, second…..in the end it was hard to tell who was the very best, so we just cheered them both on and said “dang these gals are good”, and cheered some more.   In the Gold division: Sunny and Emily   dazzled and bedazzled the audience and fellow competitors.   My favorite of their dance pieces, though I enjoy all their dancing, was during the evening show,  I have entitled it:  “ I like this dance- no, I like this dance- the story of partner dancing”.   Hit a little close to home…..

The late day competition was a heart stopper.  Two bay area formation teams toed the line and only one could reign supreme.    Congratulations to the Samba formation crew- the enthusiasm showed- especially the ending-nice little tie/pull piece- kind of liked that, but honestly the Cha Cha formation teams outfits- they were swimmingly good.    The evening show topped off the day with some folks that have real talent, intermixed with social dancing for those of us that don’t so much but think in some small way we do.  It was a delightful evening.  Hurley you should really try getting more rest.  Sue and Cindy-  we’ll be looking forward to a repeat revealing Cha Cha formation performance along with the rest of your crew at the Homodanceshow  on the 20th.  Hope to see you all there!

Until next time- keep your partners happy, don’t dance crappy, and with any luck see you in The Spot News.
